What does a remote data scientist do?

If you have a passion for math and looking for insights from large data sources, consider looking into data science. Your core job is to try and figure out interesting insights about user behavior, purchasing patterns, or optimization opportunities from your company's data. Every day you will be trying to answer some of the core questions for your employer to help them build and grow a better business.

This particular job requires a lot of math and analytics abilities. Having a background in math is helpful, but not required. What is more important is that you have the interest and ability to learn and implement data science concepts which can be learned in online courses or classes at your local college.

9 a.m. Start your day

Sign in to your computer and get set up for your day

10 a.m. Standup

Standup with your team. Discuss the projects you are currently working on and let your team know any road blocks you have so they can help you.

10:30 a.m. Jump into work

You set aside a nice time block to get into work. You start running some of your models on analytics data from your website. Today, you are trying to figure out what types of users tend to look for refunds after 3 months of usage.

12:30 p.m. Meet with co worker

One of your co workers asked for your help for their current problem. You jump on a hangout together and work through their questions.

1:15 p.m. Shift gears to other project

You have another project that is trying to figure out where users are getting stuck in the signup process. You start cleaning some of the usage data to try and start working with the data.

3:30 p.m. Meeting with team

A new project is coming in the pipeline. You meet with both technical and business leaders to get more information on what outcomes are expected from this project.

5:15 p.m. Head out

You sign off of slack for the day and take notes for where you need to get started the next day.

Report

Sometimes you will be required to synthesize your insights into digestible reports. Quite often these reports will include data visualizations and highlights from your discoveries when diving into the data.

Custom Models

You will be expected to write your own custom models depending on what project you are currently assigned to. These models look for correlations between data points that the business can use moving forward to make better data-driven decisions.
